Nathaniel has always loved sailing - he was eight years old when he joined the local seas scouts and is still there now, as an instructor!

Formally a pupil at Corfe Hills School, like so many of our students post GCSEs, Nathaniel could not envisage himself sitting in a classroom all day, every day and was looking for something more vocational.

“I’ve always been around water so when I saw what Rockley had to offer, I applied for the Level 3 Diploma course straight away! The split between the time in the classroom and on the water completely suited me.”

Now an apprentice, his key motivation is to gain as much experience and as many qualifications as possible.

“With the water right outside the classroom, it’s very much hands-on. You get involved with everything straight away.”

Career Goals

With his Paddleboard and Dinghy Instructor qualifications under his belt, Nathaniel is now looking to gain further endorsements including multihull and racing with the aim to move into a more Senior Instructor role. He’s also keen to try his hand at kitesurfing and foiling. And while he doesn’t rule out the possibility of going to university at a later date, it’s very much about his dream career in the outdoor industry.

When asked about where it all started with Rockley College and whether he would recommend Rockley’s Level 3 Diploma in Sport (Outdoor Adventure), he said:

“You don’t need watersports experience. Try it - you’ll fall in love just by being by the water. The amount of qualifications you can get, should you choose to do all the optional training is amazing.”
