Former Lytchett Minster student and avid surfing enthusiast, George, joined Rockley’s Level 3 Diploma in Sport (Outdoor Adventure) in 2021. After completing his GCSEs, George knew that "A-Levels was never an option" so attended an Open Event and was completely sold – "I knew it was what I wanted to do!"
"I 100% feel like I’ve taken the right route. There is no end of year test so you haven’t got the stress of that but you still have to work and make sure you get all the coursework done – the course is equivalent to three A-Levels after all."
Although it’s not a traditional college environment, George would definitely recommend it. Asked what he thinks of the teachers, he said: “I feel 100% supported and all the teachers are so approachable. There’s a good balance of work and being able to chat to the teachers.”
After graduating from Rockley College, George applied for the Level 3 Apprenticeship. "It’s obviously a very outdoorsy programme, I knew everyone here which made me feel really comfortable and I’ve fitted straight in. As an apprentice, I have a lot more responsibility – learning lots but also leading sessions. Last week I took a college group who had never windsurfed before. It was great watching them all being able to windsurf by the end of the session - I felt really proud of myself, plus I’m getting paid to teach!"
After he completes the apprenticeship, George hopes to continue working with the company and increasing his portfolio of qualifications. “Whatever happens I will always have the skills I have learnt here.”
