In the outdoor industry, seasonal work often means people move on after a summer or two. New locations, new opportunities and the lure of travel can take instructors all over the world.

But at Rockley, something different happens.

Every year we see familiar faces returning to our centres at Rockley Point, Poole Park and Buddens Activity Centre. Instructors come back not just for another season, but sometimes for many years. Some have even built entire careers here.

So what keeps people coming back?

A Community That Feels Like Home

The biggest reason many of our staff return is the sense of community.

Working in outdoor education naturally creates strong bonds. Long days on the water, supporting each other through busy school weeks and celebrating the small wins together builds friendships quickly.

But at Rockley it goes a step further. Many staff start as students, apprentices or trainees before becoming instructors. By the time they join the team, they already feel part of the Rockley family.

That shared history creates a culture where people genuinely support each other both on and off the water.

“It sounds cliché but Rockley really does feel like a family. You work hard together, laugh a lot and everyone supports each other. That’s what keeps bringing me back each season.” Jess, Watersports Instructor

Access to Equipment and the Water

For many instructors, working at Rockley means having access to the sports they love every day.

Our centres are equipped with a huge range of sailing dinghies, windsurf boards, kayaks, paddleboards and powerboats. When the working day finishes, staff often head straight back onto the water to train, practise or simply enjoy the conditions.

It is one of the reasons many instructors continue developing their skills while working here.

“One of the best things about working here is the equipment. You have access to boats, boards and kit all the time. If the wind picks up after work, everyone is straight out on the water again.” Josh, Senior Instructor

Competitive Pay and Professional Development

Returning for another season is also about knowing your hard work is recognised.

Rockley offers competitive seasonal wages alongside opportunities to gain further qualifications and develop professionally. Many instructors progress through additional instructor awards, leadership roles and training opportunities while they are part of the team.

For those looking to build a career in the outdoor industry, that pathway makes a real difference.

“I came for one season and ended up staying much longer as each summer I learnt something new.” Nathaniel, Senior Instructor

High Standards Across Everything We Do

People want to work somewhere that takes pride in what it delivers.

From the quality of the equipment on the water to the professionalism of the teams delivering activities, for 50 years, Rockley has built a reputation for its high standards.

That reputation attracts instructors who care about doing things properly and want to work alongside others who feel the same.

“You know the sessions are going to be run properly and safely, and the kit is always looked after. This is something that instructors notice and appreciate.” Sam, Watersports Instructor

A Team Where Everyone Is Accountable

Strong teams need structure as well as support

At Rockley there is a clear hierarchy across the centres, but it is one built around accountability and improvement rather than rigid management.

Instructors know who to turn to for guidance, feedback and support. At the same time, everyone is encouraged to share ideas and contribute to making things better each season.

“Everyone here wants to make things better. If you have an idea or want to improve something, people listen. It makes you feel valued as part of the team.” Adam, Activity Instructor

The Comfort of Familiarity

Seasonal work often involves starting again somewhere new each year.

Returning to Rockley means coming back to familiar waters, familiar faces and a team that already understands how you work. That sense of continuity makes it easier to step straight into the season and focus on what matters most, delivering great experiences for the young people and adults who join us.

“Coming back for my second season really felt easy to sloty back in to the flow of things. I knew the set up and I knew how it ran. The team was really supportive which meant I could focus straight away on giving the kids the best experience." Megan, Senior Instructor

A Legacy That Keeps People Coming Back

In 2026, Rockley celebrates 50 years of outdoor adventure.

Across those five decades, thousands of young people have discovered sailing, paddlesports and outdoor activities through school trips, training courses and holidays at Rockley Point, Poole Park and Buddens Activity Centre.

But the story of Rockley is not just about the young people who come through the gates. It is also about the staff who choose to stay part of the journey.

Some instructors return for two or three seasons. Others build careers that span decades. Andy “Straw” Smith, one of Rockley’s most recognisable instructors, has been part of the team for nearly 50 years, helping generations of sailors develop their confidence on the water.

It is a reminder that while equipment, facilities and programmes evolve, the heart of Rockley has always been its people.

The friendships, the shared passion for watersports and the sense of belonging are what bring instructors back season after season.

And as Rockley enters its next chapter, it is those same people who will continue to make it such a special place to work.
