On track for a Distinction star, college graduate Morgan, reflects on his reasons for choosing Rockley College, and shares his excitement for a future in the yachting industry.

ALTERNATIVE TO A-LEVELS

Rockley’s Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport, ideally suited sports-lover Morgan. “At school I did everything – football, rugby, hockey, basketball, just everything.” He’s also familiar with sailing, having achieved his RYA Stages 1-4 when he was younger.

Morgan was sure that A-Levels were not the ideal route for him, and, despite achieving good GSCE grades, he does admit to struggling in exam situations. After visiting a range of colleges before making his final decision, but nothing stood out like Rockley College. “It just felt different here.”

“I don’t think I’d have come out with the same grades or opportunities if I had stayed on to do A-Levels, plus, I would have been really miserable!”

MORGAN LOOKS FORWARD TO A LIFE ON THE WATER

Morgan plans to pursue a four-year cadetship on the Isle of Wight with UKSA, with a focus on gaining his Yachtmaster and engineering qualifications. The programme involves an initial five months of intense training followed by practical experience where candidates will continue their work placement on a yacht.

Competition for placements is strong with hundreds of applications received. Following an intensive week of assessments and observations on how individuals fit in to the structure of the scheme, just 50-60 candidates are finally selected.

With the ultimate goal of gaining his Officer of the Watch qualification, Morgan is hugely excited about what the future holds.

Asked whether he’s glad about choosing Rockley: “Yeah, I don’t think I’d have come out with the same grades or opportunities if I had stayed on to do A-Levels, plus, I would have been really miserable!”
