Rockley is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026, marking five decades as a proud and active part of the Dorset community. Founded in 1976 by the Gordon family, Rockley began life as a small family-run sailing operation, famously operating from a caravan on the beach in Poole Harbour.

In 1993, the business was taken over by Lis Gordon and Peter Gordon, who have since led Rockley’s growth into the organisation it is today. Fifty years on, Rockley operates three UK centres across Dorset and remains firmly rooted in its local community.

“Children have grown up, parents have passed away, and Rockley is now celebrating 50 years. Not many businesses reach this milestone, yet we’re already thinking ahead to our 60th anniversary. That’s the difference a family business makes - it’s not about the short term, it’s about legacy and creating a lasting impact.”

SUPPORTING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

Throughout its history, Rockley has introduced tens of thousands of local young people, families and schools to sailing and watersports, using the outdoors as a platform to build confidence, teamwork and resilience. The company continues to work closely with local schools, youth organisations and community initiatives, including their long-standing involvement with the Dorset School Games, helping to provide inclusive, high-quality sporting opportunities for young people across the county.

Rockley has also supported a number of local charities over the years, most notably Julia’s House Children’s Hospice, delivering sibling weekends and outdoor activity experiences designed to offer respite, connection and positive shared experiences for families.

ALL ABOUT THE PEOPLE

A defining feature of Rockley’s story is its people. Many instructors, staff members and alumni who first experienced Rockley as young sailors have gone on to return as employees, volunteers or parents, creating a multi-generational connection that continues to shape the company culture today.

As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations this year, Rockley plans to recognise both its heritage and the community that has supported it for five decades, with further details to be announced as the anniversary year begins.

For Rockley, reaching 50 years is not only a milestone worth celebrating, but a reflection of its long-standing commitment to Dorset’s young people, families and community partners - a commitment it intends to carry forward for many years to come.
