As a young scout and later a Scout Leader, Emily has always had access to, and loved the great outdoors. She knew very early on that her future would involve working outdoors - attending Weymouth College to study Outdoor Education where she fell in love with water activities such as kayaking and sailing.

Like so many, Emily’s plans to go to America were halted thanks to Covid and she found herself working in a factory for several years. During this time, she continued to help with the Scouts every Thursday doing as many activities as possible: “I was itching to get out, and so at every opportunity, I would be outside and doing stuff like kayaking.”

“It’s everything I wanted. It’s literally perfect because the thing I was missing were the qualifications and this offers me that and more.”

When asked how she was finding the course, Emily is positively buzzing! “It’s everything I wanted. It’s literally perfect because the thing I was missing were the qualifications and this offers me that and more. I was initially attracted to it for the water-based qualifications, but I am keen to get everything. It means I can now really get my foot in the door.”

“My main goal is to travel and these qualifications are the key to that!”

Emily admits to being very apprehensive at the start of the course, having no idea what to expect: “I was really nervous about meeting everybody because I’ve been in and out of the industry for years. I thought everyone else would be younger and more experienced than me, but we are all on the same level and we’re all about the same age. It’s so great to be around people who have the same things in common as me.”

Emily is hugely excited about gaining her qualifications and then working a season at Rockley. She has clearly reignited her passion for being outdoors and has absolutely no intention of returning to an office or factory environment: “My main goal is to travel and these qualifications are the key to that!”
