A largely important component part of the Rockley Education BTEC Level 3 and NCFE Level 2 Sport (Outdoor Adventure) programmes is the practical sport element. We carefully plan the guided learning hours and college experience of each student with a perfect balance of time in the classroom and time out of it, getting the vital practical experiences that help shape their future in the outdoor industry.
Most people are already aware of the comprehensive watersports programme we offer with Education programmes, but what else do we offer?
Accompanying the waterbased programme is a scheme of work dedicated to land based outdoor and adventurous activities.
Did you know…
There are three units of work within the BTEC level 3 programme focused on a students development of non-waterbased sports. These are; Skills for Landbased Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (Unit:33), Leading Landbased Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (Unit: 35) and Alternative Pursuits (Unit: 38).
Here’s a little glimpse of what our students get up to on our land-based sport units of work.
Unit 33: Skills for Land-based Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (Year 1)
- An introduction to orienteering, including a range of skills and activities in Upton Country Park
- Hiking – lead by our lowland leaders, students will learn all the core skills in navigation and how to prepare for an expedition, which they will undertake in the Purbecks. This expedition is undertaken as an independent and unguided team
- Mountain Biking – from maintenance checks to technical skills in the Wareham Forest, students will learn how to get the most out of our fleet of mountain bikes
Unit 35: Leading land-based outdoor and adventurous activities (Year 2)
- With a year of land-based experience under their belts, students now transition into leading practical sessions in the activities studied in year one
- Students, under the guidance of our experienced teaching staff will lead micro-sessions and independent activities that will develop their instructor skills in preparation for future employment
Unit 38: Alternative Pursuits (Year 2)
- In this unit, students are encouraged to research a range of new or undiscovered outdoor and adventurous activities.
- After the research phase, students plan and lead their own alternative pursuit for their fellow students – this is usually one of the most fun afternoons in the year
In addition to all this, a huge experience our students get the chance to be a part of is our annual Ski Trip! In March 2020 38 students will be heading out to the Alps for a week on the slopes!
With all this on offer in addition to our fully funded and varied watersport programme, it just adds to the amazing value students can get from choose Rockley Education for their sixth form experience.
