Despite the challenging weather, this year’s Dorset School Games 'Can Do' Festival, hosted at Poole Park by Rockley, proved a huge success and saw over 200 primary and secondary school pupils enjoy two days of fun, challenging and competitive activities.
It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm generated around the event, thanks to so many young people eager to try the activities on offer. Each pupil was given on-land and water kayaking instruction which led to a series of kayaking races and culminated in the final, made up of winners from the previous heats. During the day, pupils were also given the opportunity to have a go at stand up paddleboarding as well as mess around on the Mega SUP – the day’s clear winner in terms of fun. You cannot beat the excitement of pushing each other into the water!
Effective Outdoor Learning Opportunities
We are always so delighted, that year on year, so many schools continue to bring their children to the event and can see the benefit of offering this learning opportunity outside of the classroom. Our staff, college work experience students and the Dorset School Games team all enjoy delivering the event – mainly thanks to the great spirit created by the pupils. A highlight of the event for us was the spontaneous singing and dancing (motivated by the fact that we wanted to keep the pupils warm) which pretty much saw the whole of Poole Park demonstrating their best moves and singing voices to YMCA and the Cha Cha Slide Dance!
Thank you
A huge thank you to everyone involved and we look forward to doing it all again next year!
