As an Outdoor Adventure student at Exeter College, it was during a visit to one of Rockley’s Buddens Activity Centre that prompted Rosie to apply for the Outdoor Instructor Apprenticeship. With a clear love for the outdoors, Rosie is benefitting hugely from her time here, gaining confidence in leading sessions. She is set on a career in the outdoors and loves the positive impact it has on young people – the way it challenges them and encourages them to push boundaries within a supportive environment.

As a long-term lover of most sports – cricket, hockey, tennis, volleyball, kayaking and climbing, Rosie describes being outdoors as her “happy place.”

Armed with a triple distinction from Exeter College, Rosie knew that she wanted more of the same. As is the case with many students, learning by sitting in a classroom isn't for everyone which is why this educational route is suiting her “perfectly.”

Since joining the apprenticeship, it’s been all go for Rosie and the other candidates. “We went straight into it with all the activities which was great. I’ve been shadowing the Rockley Instructors on their sessions with the college students over recent weeks in various activities including archery, kayaking and tomahawk throwing.”

As the weeks progress, Rosie is preparing to lead her own sessions, which would have been a daunting prospect in the past. She is, however, gaining more and more confidence as the apprenticeship progresses:

“To be honest, a few years ago, before college, I would never have thought I would have the confidence to lead a session. I’m now really comfortable – particularly leading the climbing sessions.”

As for the future: “I was considering a Sports Coaching course at Bournemouth University or travelling or gaining further experience doing more of the same. I’m not sure yet!”
