Active Dorset and Rockley have been working together for over four years to get children on the water and to promote the benefits and accessibility of sailing and watersports to school pupils.
As part of National School Sports Week and now in its sixth year, the Dorset School Games two-day event held across 29 and 30 June will see over 100 primary school and up to 150 secondary school pupils compete on the water.
The Youth Sport Trust, a national children’s charity, are celebrating NSSW in its 9th year, with thousands of schools and more than a million young people taking part. The initiative aligns with the Youth Sport Trust’s core mission of building a brighter future for young people through sport. NSSW is a huge celebration of everything that is great about PE and school sport, and we invite all schools across the United Kingdom to register to take part and #celebratePE.
Whether through traditional sports such as football, hockey or netball, or in alternative activities such as sailing, parkour, dance or treasure hunts, there is something out there for everyone to enjoy and be active. National School Sport Week started in 2008, and last year saw over 5,000 schools and 1.8 million pupils take part!
“We are really excited to be celebrating PE over National School Sports Week. We’re seeing some real progress in a number of schools where PE is seen as something far more than a block of one sport followed by another” says Ali Oliver, Chief Executive of the Youth Sport Trust.
“Within secondary schools we are seeing programmes such as YST Girls Active significantly reimagine how young women and teachers can work together to close the gender gap while programmes such as YST’s My Personal Best, develop character and enhance employability skills.”
A Year in School Sport
- 21,359 schools were reached through the UK School Games and over 1.1 million young people engaged in extra-curricular sport every week in schools taking part.
- 8.3 million students had the opportunity to participate in the School Games in 2015-16
- 843,083 young people were provided with direct opportunities to participate in PE & Sport through26 YST programmes
- 129,553 young people were provided with Youth Sport Trust training opportunities, including coaching, officiating & volunteering
- 34,446 teachers, coaches and volunteers received training from the Youth Sport Trust across 27 programmes, with over 70% receiving training in inclusive practice
